Creative Writing – Writing For An Audience

Posted by on Jan 7, 2012 in Writing Books

My first book writing experience was titled The Journey. This was an autobiography about my childhood set in the farming communities of southern Ireland. At the time of writing it I gave no thought whatsoever as to who I was actually writing the book, only that I felt compelled to write it.

Now whilst The Journey has in fact gone on to be an enormously successful book and continues to be downloaded daily, it’s good fortune has been more to do with my writing skills, my choice of publisher, and their marketing department, rather than my instincts as to what makes a good book or indeed a best seller.

Regardless of what you say, all writers want to see their work recognized. Few of us believe that it will be a best seller but from time to time I’m confident that most of us have daydreamed of our work being on the best sellers list and what it might be like to be at a book signing at a top London book store.

Clearly, unless… you are exceptionally talented or lucky, the odds are not in favour of your book becoming an overnight success as 99% of all books written hardly ever see the light of day.

There are however a few initial steps that you can take to leverage the odds in your favour before you even put pen to paper. First off and probably the most important point is that you need to give thought to your writing audience. In other words who you believe will be interested in your book.

For example, if you were to write about the “Flight of the Wiley Bird” and tell readers about how it immigrates every winter to some hot climate then I’m confident you will have an audience but a very limited one in real terms.

Now I’m not suggesting that you shouldn’t write for a limited audience but what I am suggesting is that regardless of your chosen subject you should be aware right from the start who your audience is and what potential there is for the sale of you manuscript.

Imagine if you will, that you are three months or 200 pages in, on a book that you are writing purely for fame and fortune, and someone asks you, who do you think will read it? It’s at this point you start to realize that your formula for a best seller isn’t quite right so it’s back to the drawing board or even worse you just give up.

So, in my opinion, the most important lesson for first time writers is that you should be aware of whom your audience is. In fact the more you know about your audience the easier it is to form a connection through your writing and you do your job well then you almost guaranteeing the success of you book.

Creative Article Writer Keeps Em’ Entertained

Posted by on Jul 4, 2011 in Article Writer

When trying to make a living by writing, you are in essence doing two things at once. So too, should your writing be, doing two things at once. Entertaining and informing all in one swing. These are the makings of a Creative Article Writer.

A Creative Article Writer keeps em’ Entertained!?! WHAT?

Wow, so now, not only do I have to write good quality information about a hot topic but now I have to sing and dance too!?

Not really, not unless you really want to? All you have to do Is just share a little of yourself. One very important key note to success in this matter:

LESS IS MORE.

I cannot say that loud enough, because it truly is so important. Less is more, less is more, less is more and whenever you’re in doubt, give less. Just remember, while writing and you begin to share of yourself start repeating over and over that same mantra in your head, LESS is more.

People overall, are not going to really want to know about you in depth. They just want enough to know there is a real person behind the words. If you start going into great detail about you and your take on the subject, you run the risk of losing their interest or worse losing credibility in the eyes of the readers. Its always super important to stay on topic.

Whenever you give of yourself, it automatically enhances the quality of the article by 100%. It brings value to the subject by adding uniqueness. Others may relate, you become identifiable. One way to gauge this is by sharing just one anecdote or story by example. Make sure it is precisely relevant to your subject line. Also keeping it to one or two lines at most, in extreme cases, a paragraph.

NEVER more than 4-5 sentences, never more than one paragraph. Always closer to one line, maybe two.

If you find that at any point it is becoming dominant, stop and start over or share something else. People like to identify but only so far as their attention span will allow, usually around 8 seconds off topic. So, if you are sharing too much, you will know by how many words per article it takes up in density rate. If you read your article back to yourself and you are spending more time sharing than informing then its time to rewrite, rethink, or restructure your article.

Keep going and never stop. If you do decide to rework the subject, keep what you have written as it may come in handy or useful somewhere else in your writing endeavors. You never know. Slowing down is not an option. You should develop the habit of throwing out the bad, reworking the good, and being able to distinguish the difference between them all in one constant motion.

There is so much more to it but these are some great pointers to keep in mind when you are just starting out. Remember the mantra (when sharing) less is more and a good Creative Article Writer keeps em’ entertained without any song or dance.

Accelerate Your Creative Writing Skills

Posted by on Aug 6, 2010 in Writing Skills

Creative writing skills occur naturally in everyone but for many, these creative writing skills lie dormant and are a source of untapped potential because the person does not know instinctively how to utilise them. Most people try writing at some point in their lives – whether for pleasure, therapeutic reasons or with the intention of earning money from their pursuits but tapping into their creativity can be a source of great frustration when the necessary skill set seems annoyingly out of reach. Increasing those creative writing skills is not difficult but it does require a focussed intent and a determination to succeed. It also requires a great deal of time management, as to be truly successful; a certain amount of time must be allocated to the task of learning.

Writing is akin to starting a new job or an apprenticeship scheme; the basic techniques have to be learned first and thoroughly before progressing to projects of an increased level. Jumping ahead too quickly can just cause increased frustration and essentially put the potential writer off from continuing. Creative writing skills need to be coaxed and nurtured for best results and any new writer would do well to joining a writing class so that they can learn from a professional tutor and communicate with other like-minded people.

A beginner’s class is set up so that different techniques are introduced at a level that is suitable for all but the tutor has to also introduce new techniques to keep everyone stimulated and consistently learning. Whilst much can be learned from a beginners writing class, the writer must also put in some writing practice at home as this will accelerate the learning curve dramatically. Without a doubt, regular practice is the most important part of any learning process and individual creative writing skills literally do increase in leaps and bounds if the writer persists over a period of weeks and months.

There are many techniques that can be incorporated quickly and easily into a daily or weekly agenda and will whip those creative writing skills into shape:

•Join an online writing course and have personal tuition for careful monitoring of your progress. Most courses are set so that students work at their own pace so there is no pressure to complete projects to a specific time.

•Purchase e-coaching. Inexpensive yet effective. This way the tutor tailors personal writing exercises to the individuals needs and provides individual feedback.

•Set aside personal writing time each day. Writing techniques will only sharpen if regular practice is provided.

•Set up a projects file and include photos from magazines, cuttings from newspapers or even list song titles that inspire. If inspiration is minimal, use the projects file to promote creativity, for example: photos from magazines could be used for flash fiction projects.

•Create a dream diary. Vivid dreamers need never be stuck for ideas providing they are written in a diary. They can be used to promote inspiration quickly and easily.

•Become a people-watcher and use real-life events and occurrences in writing projects.

Developing a strong foundation within writing realms may take a lot of hard work and dedication, but the results pay dividends in only a short period of time. Creating fun challenges on a personal level helps to accelerate creative writing skills and ultimately, this natural progression becomes a great source of motivation.

Enhance Your Creative Writing Abilities

Posted by on Jul 20, 2010 in Composition & Creative Writing

Creative writing is considered to be one of the most perplexing forms of articulating thoughts and ideas on paper. It turns out to be a hard nut to crack because it requires the ability to think freely, giving thoughts a modicum of leeway, and express ideas and experienced feelings sincerely and openly.

That’s why putting wind in the sails with creative writing is not within every writer’s grasp. It means that a person, who succeeded in process writing approach that is all about planning, revising, re-arranging, and deleting text, re-reading, and producing multiple drafts before producing finished documents, will have the same good results in creative writing.

Surely, it doesn’t imply that creative writing process doesn’t need proper planning and preparation, it means that creative writing permits the author to deviate from the specific writing styles and not to be consistent with all the standards of this style. In a word, creative writing gives the author leeway in terms of presentation and development of a piece of writing.

Since creative writing is not simply a matter of sitting down, putting pen to paper, following smart instructions of emeritus pundits, commence at the beginning and write through to the end. Creative approach treats all writing as a creative act that requires time, positive feedback, and inspiration to be done well. People who engage in creative writing do not merely think freely; they view the world from free-thinking perspective.

Without a doubt, creative writing is not only about inspiration and gift of the writer, and it is far from coming easy to the writer, it also needs a lot of elbow grease in order to produce a piece of writing worth the attention of the readers.

The key to success in creative writing lies in the author’s ability to be frank with his readers and honest with himself. Don’t be afraid to step aside from the established standards of the particular writing style, and open the door of your brain to the new ideas that cross the threshold of your imagination and knock around your mind.

Remember that process and explorations are the keystones in creative writing, rather than the finished product. Let yourself release your inner genius and vent on paper the most bizarre ideas that amassed in your mind. The source of ideas for your creative writing can be various kinds of resources of creativity such as oral tradition, dreams, childhood memories, sense perceptions and intuition.

Katrina Crosbie, a tutor of creative writing in Edinburgh University’s Open Studies programme, asserts that getting in touch with subconscious mind is the key to original and creative writing. She also claims that every writer can harness three simple techniques to enhance his creative writing abilities, they are mental focusing techniques, harnessing the power of your dreams and journal writing. Harnessing these techniques takes hard work; so, if you are ready, roll up your sleeves and follow these simple strategies.

I. Mental focusing techniques

Mental focusing techniques involve focusing on the positive outcome. It implies that you should concentrate and regulate your mental activity in order to enter a quiet state of your mind. The key point in mental focusing is to get rid of all the stray thoughts and replace it with one thought; this process should gradually induce a calm sensation. The procedure is very simple, you make yourself comfortable in a cozy armchair, and in all possible ways try to awake creativity inside of you.

You should say something like “I’m getting in touch with my creativity source”, and imagine physically how the stream of creativity comes into your mind. Remember the sensation of clear, cool water on your face, or a stream of fresh breeze, which is blowing in your face. Then imagine yourself sitting at your word processor, typing fluently, and writing avidly. After several minutes open your eyes and commence writing.

II. Harness the power of your dreams

Dreams have tremendous power. The subconscious memory can be the direct cause of the certain dreams. “When the mind is centered on certain things, the sleeper goes over his life again and again in phantom fashion. He lives over the experiences of his daily life.”

Overall, your daydreams can be important, just write them down after waking up in the morning. Perhaps, later on, re-reading the notes of your dreams will prompt you some interesting ideas for your creative works.”These can be triggers for an especially imaginative piece of work. American writer Joyce Carol Oates has said that her novel Bellefleur was inspired by a dream of a walled garden which haunted her for years ’till she felt she had to write about it.”

III. Keep the writing journal

This technique of enhancing your creativity is very simple and at the same time highly productive. Buy yourself a notebook, so that you can always have it at hand and write some brief narratives in it on a daily basis.

Don’t focus on the style, mistakes, and, in general, in the way you write. Just write down the first things that occur in your mind, even if you think that this is junk. The main idea is to keep your hand moving and to feel a growing sense of inspiration and confidence. In the course of time, you will become a practiced hand in writing. Surely, you’ll find your journal notes a rich source of inspiration and ideas.

If you really want to enhance you creative writing abilities, give a try to these simple techniques, and bring your craft as a writer into play!

Ways to Improve Your Creative Writing Skills

Posted by on Jun 1, 2010 in Writing Skills

For some people creative writing is very hard. They have a hard time trying to put their thoughts and ideas on paper. For some no matter what they do, the writing is always of poor quality and the ideas seem jumbled and non-seneschal. People make the mistake of thinking that creative writing has to be off the wall, out of this world writing. That is not the cases at all.

There are ways in which you can improve your creative writing skills. These are simple and hardly require much effort at all. The most important thing about creative writing is that you write about things that have meaning to you. If you are writing about things that you know nothing about or do not care about then yes, the writing will be bad. When people write about things they care about the writing automatically improves because the reader can see the reader’s personality coming through in the words that they have written. The writer begins to capture the reader, and when this happens then you know you have written a good piece.

You should always carry a notebook or journal around with you. This way you can write down feelings and emotions. You can write about things that you see and how you felt. From these little notes you can expand and create fantastic stories. Some people even begin writing a book from these little sentences they write in their notebooks.

Another key to good creative writing is to organize your thoughts and ideas. If the writing is not organized, no matter what you do the writing will not be good. The reader will be confused and in some cases they will give up reading. You should always separate your ideas into plot, setting, characters and climax. Under each heading write you thoughts and ideas. Once this is done, you a begin putting together the piece of the puzzle, which is your story.
