The first and foremost thing of making a good research paper is the choice of a right kind of topic. Then the hypothesis needs to be made from this subject. The following are the main formal conditions of a good hypothesis

1)      Non-contradictoriness- A hypothesis must first and foremost be self consistent and the conclusion derivable from it deductively must not contradict. For example, it will be self contradictory to believe that all philosophers are university professors. However, a belief which may appear false or ridiculous but against which we have no positive evidence can’t be considered self contradictory. Copernican believe that earth revolves around the sun and not vice versa may have appeared ridiculous when it was first suggest. Similarly, the belief that the Earth is round is apparently false but in fact, true. Therefore, only that belief is self contradictory against which we have positive evidence. In this also comes the fact that a hypothesis should not contradict any established truth. How ever, since scientist regard their theories as no more than hypothesis, any hypothesis contradictory to an accepted scientific theory need not be rejected.

2)      Definite and clear- A hypothesis must not be vague. When its meaning is ambiguous its truth can’t be verified.

3)      Verifiable- How important verifiability is for hypothesis can be gauged from the following quotation by Carvelt Read “Except the conditions of verifiability, and definiteness for the sake of verifiability, with out which a proposition doesn’t deserve the name of a hypothesis, it seems inadvisable to lay down rules for a legitimate hypothesis.” At the same time a hypothesis is developed, it may be impossible to verify it actually because of practical or technical difficulties. But while a hypothesis is frequently incapable of immediate verification it must be verifiable i.e., its consequence must be stated in terms of determinant empirical operations. A hypothesis may not be fully verifiable because universal propositions can’t be demonstrated: but it will be regarded verifiable if we know the evidence which will disprove it. For example, our belief that all men are mortal will be disproved if there is a man who defies death and nothing can kill him.

4)      Simplest- As a rule the simplest is the best hypothesis. Simplicity, how ever, doesn’t mean familiarity. It means simplicity of system. It means generality. In the word of Cohen and Nagel,” One theory will there fore be said to be more simple or general than another if the first can, while the second can’t, exhibit the connection it is investigating as special instances of the relations it takes as fundamental.” .

After making the hypothesis the next step is to make a proper research methodology plan. According to this plan the sampling, data collection and the analysis of the collected information will be done. The findings including the total process needs to be written in the customized manner.
