You do not need to get a doctorate degree; you just need to write a book.
Writing a book takes a lot less time and costs a lot less than getting a doctorate. In addition, an eBook gives you the perception of credibility and the influence of an expert regardless of your topic. Writing and distributing a digital book is also so much easier to do than finding an agent and a publishing house to print your book. True, if your book is not popular you will not get paid as much on the talk circuit but you will be able to identify yourself as the author of the current study of or the well researched topic of, or whatever your choice of topic.
Do not get me wrong. Writing a digital book requires work and time. You can lose whatever good in your reputation you have if you produce schlock. Here are steps to take before you consider distributing your eBook.
Edit your book. When I write even an article for publication I probably edit it at least 3 times. It never fails. I make at least a couple of edits each time that are so obvious to me which I never saw previously.
The point is you need to edit your book. You need to look for spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and how your paragraphs flow. This is the time I eliminate the fluff. I do my best to say what I am going to say as simply as possible without a bunch of descriptive adjectives which usually do nothing to the point I am trying to make. Pare your writing down and delete what you can. This is not a novel you are writing. Readers want to get to your important messages and your arguments for your reasoning.
If you are not a good editor, hire someone. I spent 20 years as editor of a peer reviewed journal on gifted education. What I learned is that even people who you think should be good writers have trouble getting their message across. One of the editorial tactics that I learned from a Contributing Editor and that you can use for your eBook is to write SO WHAT? in the margin when a point is made that does not go anywhere or relate to anything. My advice: have someone else read the eBook. They may have questions that never occurred to you about your information.
Put together a resource page that you can refer to when you are writing and that you can refer your readers to when they ask questions.
Taking the time to edit your eBook and to do it well will save you much time and aggravation later. It will also just about guarantee you a very credible reputation as the expert in your field.
Think and plan how you are going to market your eBook before you start the writing. You will find that your marketing plan will set the tone for your writing. Your marketing ideas will also help you give priority to the major points you need to make for your market.
Do not select a title until you finish writing the book, unless, that is some title comes to you out of the blue that is perfect. The title needs to be catchy and different from all the others. At the same time it needs to be something that accurately describes the message of your eBook.
Be sure to save the eBook as a secured PDF. You do this so that readers cannot make changes or copy sections of the text.
Write about your eBook in your blog and write guest posts about it in other people’s blogs. Mention your eBook on twitter and Face Book. Record a 5 minute video about your book and leave it on You Tube. Send a press release to your local papers and to online PR directories.

After you’ve completed the main content of your book, you realize that you’re not quite done yet with the writing part. You need some words to put on the back cover – words that convey everything that’s special and interesting about your book. But, even though you’re the author, this back cover thing has you stumped. You realize that you’re not sure how to write a back cover for a book.
I mean, it’s hard to find someone who can really show you how to do it. I guess it’s because it’s such a small part of the whole book writing process, that it often gets overlooked by writing course instructors. Yet, every book MUST have some sort of book summary that lets the reader know at a glance why they should read what you’ve written.
While there’s really no universal template for writing a back cover book blurb, the good news is that we’ve all read many of them over the years. The quickest way to figure out how you should write yours is to look at the back covers of similar books. These can give you an idea of the style of writing used to convey what’s inside.
If you’re the author of a non-fiction book, you want to make sure the back cover presents all the main points of interest that you cover in the book chapters. Just think. If you were in an elevator with your prospective reader, and you only have 60 seconds to tell them all about your book, what would you say?
You wouldn’t want to waste time giving them filler information, you want to give them bullet points of all the juicy benefits that they will get when they read your book. When people buy a non-fiction title, they want to know something in particular. When they glance at the back cover, the copy there must compel them to want to know more. The reader should feel like your book will enhance their life in some way.
If your book is a fiction novel. You want to take a slightly different approach by focusing more on characters, or an intriguing major event that happens in the story. The back cover copy must draw the reader into wanting to know more about what’s going to happen to either the main characters, or how an event plays out.
Drama, intrigue, excitement, mystery and story uniqueness is what you want to emphasize. If you have two strong characters that interact a lot in the story, then give the reader a little background overview of who they are and what major challenge they face. Of course, you’ll leave the reader hanging. If they want to know more, they have to read the book.
The bottom line is, when writing a back cover book blurb, you want to feature the most intriguing parts of the content and give the reader a little taste of what’s inside.

Publishing a book can sometimes be an underestimated task. It seems simple- I’ve got a great idea, so I’ll write the book, send it through to a few publishers, choose the one which offers me the best deal, and tell all my friends to buy it from the local bookstore… Well, I’d like to tell you that it’s as easy as that, but I’m afraid it’s not. In fact, setting out to publish a book, especially if you are new to the publishing world, is an undertaking of epic proportions! Even if you do everything right, it is still likely that you will get turned down. However, there are still a few things that can maximize your chances:
Write the whole book first- for fiction. Nonfiction is very different. But if you are writing a fiction book, write the whole thing first. Most publishers only want to view the first few chapters before they request the rest of the book, yet all the same, write the whole manuscript before sending in even those first few chapters. You will find that as your storyline unravels near the completion of the book, you will have o adjust the beginning in accordance, even if you have planned well. So finish your book first. See it like a product you would find in a toy store- you wouldn’t buy half a toy, would you?
Write a fully-fledged proposal, not the book itself- for nonfiction. Nonfiction books are most often sold on the basis of a formal proposal, because it is the content that counts, rather than the style of writing and the plot. Such proposals include a detailed synopsis, sample material, and even market research for the final product. The problem with writing the book itself first, is that the buyer (publisher, as it were) may have a completely different opinion as to how the book should be constructed, and you could end up wasting vast quantities of time by writing a book that no one wants to buy!
Get an agent and submit your book to publishers. While it is not a necessity to have an agent when submitting a manuscript for publishing, it remains wise to do so, as most unagented submissions are thrown in the bin. So find an agent- online, or however you see fit- and allow them to act as the link between you and your publisher.
Be professional about it! Publishers get so many submissions every year that they do not have to put up with a difficult author- even if your manuscript is outstanding. So be polite and accommodating when dealing with both agents and publishers.
Publishing a book is a great way to make money out of what you love. It is fun, simple, and
rewarding. And if you write a good enough manuscript, you may even be able to retire from the proceeds… So keep writing, follow the steps above, and get that book published!

My first book writing experience was titled The Journey. This was an autobiography about my childhood set in the farming communities of southern Ireland. At the time of writing it I gave no thought whatsoever as to who I was actually writing the book, only that I felt compelled to write it.
Now whilst The Journey has in fact gone on to be an enormously successful book and continues to be downloaded daily, it’s good fortune has been more to do with my writing skills, my choice of publisher, and their marketing department, rather than my instincts as to what makes a good book or indeed a best seller.
Regardless of what you say, all writers want to see their work recognized. Few of us believe that it will be a best seller but from time to time I’m confident that most of us have daydreamed of our work being on the best sellers list and what it might be like to be at a book signing at a top London book store.
Clearly, unless… you are exceptionally talented or lucky, the odds are not in favour of your book becoming an overnight success as 99% of all books written hardly ever see the light of day.
There are however a few initial steps that you can take to leverage the odds in your favour before you even put pen to paper. First off and probably the most important point is that you need to give thought to your writing audience. In other words who you believe will be interested in your book.
For example, if you were to write about the “Flight of the Wiley Bird” and tell readers about how it immigrates every winter to some hot climate then I’m confident you will have an audience but a very limited one in real terms.
Now I’m not suggesting that you shouldn’t write for a limited audience but what I am suggesting is that regardless of your chosen subject you should be aware right from the start who your audience is and what potential there is for the sale of you manuscript.
Imagine if you will, that you are three months or 200 pages in, on a book that you are writing purely for fame and fortune, and someone asks you, who do you think will read it? It’s at this point you start to realize that your formula for a best seller isn’t quite right so it’s back to the drawing board or even worse you just give up.
So, in my opinion, the most important lesson for first time writers is that you should be aware of whom your audience is. In fact the more you know about your audience the easier it is to form a connection through your writing and you do your job well then you almost guaranteeing the success of you book.

To be a published writer is one of the most rewarding
occupations and pastimes – both financially and creatively. I
find it a very satisfying and enjoyable activity.
I can’t each you how to write, let alone how to be a writer. All
I can do is give you some tips and guidelines, which hopefully
will make it a lot easier…if that is what you really want to
do. They are all based on what I have learnt by doing it myself
- usually through the long process of trial and error. I hope
they are interesting and helpful to you in your quest to be a
writer.
There are no ABC’s in writing. Having the ability to put words
down on paper is only the beginning to writing. There is a great
deal more to be learned on the techniques.
There is a huge market for creative work. As a result of
enormous demand, editors and publishers are continually on the
lookout for new writers and fresh ideas. Freelance writers can
earn good fees and royalties. However, I found that one has to
specialise and make decisions: either write books or articles
for “maggies”.
What is the size of the market? There are over 50000 magazines
and newspapers published in English world wide, including the
gate-way to the Asian market in Singapore. Incidentally, I
believe the Far East is the growth area for English books in the
future. Thousands of fiction and non-fiction books are published
each year, as well as countless radio and television scripts.
There are also numerous stage plays performed throughout the
world. So you can see that there are enormous outlets for your
writing – especially if you have more than a touch of
talent…and I’m sure many of you do.
Once you have learned how to write for these markets, you should
have no difficulty selling your work.
Don’t give up after rejection follows rejection. Whatever you
do, PERSERVERE. Remember perserverance and not talent is often
the difference between a published and an unpublished writer.
* I believe that writing is a skill, which like other artistic
skills, you can learn and develop with practice. Just like a
sportsman or artisan, the more you write, the better you will
become. So write as often as you can. I definitely feel that my
writing abilities have improved dramatically in the last two*
long years, since I have totally dedicated myself to the
pursuit. * Now ten!
I do not think that an aspiring writer needs any special
educational qualifications or background to be a writer. Writers
come from all walks of life and all backgrounds. Look at me! My
father was a life assurance salesman, then rose to executive.
The only family link is my grandfather Billy, who was a sports
journalist.
Because writing is a relatively easy and inexpensive pursuit to
get into, nearly everyone has the same opportunities. However,
how far you go will largely depend upon your own creative talent
and application. Also how much you really DESIRE to be a writer.
N.B.DETERMINATION and PERSISTENCE more than anything else will
get you there. I believe that most people will find abundant
amounts of these qualities within them. If you look hard enough
and are really tested. But only once they have found what it is
that they really want to do with their lives. Hopefully there’ll
be more writers around in the future, because they are “the eyes
of the world”. You see the world through the unique perspective
of the author.
Enough on that subject. I’ve written plenty about it in my book
STEPS TO SUCCESS, PROSPERITY and HAPPINESS already. Plug plug!
Everyone has their own style of writing, as well as their unique
life experiences they may wish to share in the form of words.
Also they have their own reasons for wanting to write. To
journal to merely express your thoughts and feelings, or with
the aim of publication – to be read by others. I’m definitely
not the “arty-farty-airy-fairy” type of writer, as I only write
for a reason, a PURPOSE – to try to make a difference in the
world through the power of the written word. To touch lives
(pervert!) and make an impact on people through encouraging,
uplifting, enlightening and hopefully even inspiring people
around the globe. That’s me (and was my original intention and
vision when I started out)… But no matter your reason for
wanting to write, I find it the most satisfying and enjoyable
“occupation/pursuit” I’ve ever had… and this has now evolved
into something far bigger than I could ever have imagined.
(And with the invention of the www it’s now so much easier to be
published and let your words touch lives around the globe… and
you too can use this amazing tool of instant communication).
There is tremendous power in imagination: YOUR creative
imagination. Albert Einstein stated: “Imagination is more
important than knowledge.” Napoleon believed that “the human
race is governed by it’s imagination.”
Pascal: “Imagination disposes of everything; it creates beauty,
justice and happiness, which is everything in this world.” Use
it well and it’s amazing power will astound you – in your
writing as well as in all areas of your life.
